Chapter Twelve

Remi glanced at the others sitting around the table in the NPS trailer. Since the storm had passed and the recent crime scene was so much closer to the NPS satellite office than to the offices in the Sugarlands Visitor Center, Lee had opened up the trailer again for business. Everyone who was anyone was crammed inside.

Someone had brought in a much larger table for the meeting. It sat in the middle of the trailer, since it wouldn’t have fit in the conference room. Remi didn’t have a clue how they’d managed to get the thing through the door. Maybe the legs came off. She wasn’t sure. Didn’t care. What mattered right now was that she once again had the attention of the BAU. And this time, they weren’t ignoring her or shooting down her theories. They were actually listening from the other end of the conference call while Special Agent Lee and her embarrassed pseudoboss out of Knoxville sat beside each other surrounded by rangers and NPS investigators, explaining what had happened.

“I’m not following.” The voice of Chris Jensen, the lead BAU guy on the call, sounded through the phone’s speaker. “How does she know the remains don’t belong to her sister? She said at the beginning of the call that the corpse was wearing her sister’s shirt and necklace.”

Beside her, Duncan gave Remi an encouraging nod. She leaned toward the phone positioned in the middle of the table. “She is sitting right here and can speak for herself. My sister, Becca, was a junk food addict. She had five cavities by the time she was eight years old. She was also stubborn and refused to wear her retainer after my dad paid a fortune for braces. Her teeth had already started going crooked again her sophomore year, which was the source of many heated arguments between her and my parents. The skeleton the SAR team found had perfectly straight teeth. And no fillings.”

There was the brief sound of someone murmuring to someone else on the other end of the phone.

“More importantly, Becca was fearless and rebellious, a dangerous combination. When she was fifteen, she took a joyride on a neighbor’s dirt bike into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. She had a horrible wreck, broke her right wrist and her left leg. She had a long metal pin surgically placed in her femur. It was never removed. The skeleton showed no signs of any breaks in the leg or wrist. And no metal pin.”

“That metal pin could have fallen out over the past decade. Maybe a wild animal carried it off.”

The ME was sitting across from her and motioned to let her know he would answer. “I’m Dr. Hennington, the medical examiner. There were no signs of previous breaks or any marks on the skeleton that would indicate use of medical devices such as pins. I’ve also reviewed the reports in Miss Rebecca Jordan’s file that list her medical history. That skeleton isn’t Rebecca Jordan.”

“Then how did her shirt and jewelry end up on the skeleton?” Jensen asked.
